School Focus

The Television Production Specialty Program at Hylton High School provides students with the skills needed for a school-to-work transition. This episode of School Focus spotlights first-year students as they learn how to produce 3D Animation Videos.

 

The Benefits

Students participate in a 3 to 4-year program of studies that introduces them to the field of multimedia communications, technical training, and how to apply this training to real life experiences.

Students receive hands-on training from industry prepared professionals teaching a college-level television production class. the training facility is a modern high-tech laboratory built for training and implementation of communications solutions.

Students are well trained in communications applications and are motivated to reach the technical levels necessary to become a professional in communications field. Following graduation, students move naturally from their high school experience into technical schools/college communications and television majors and/or directly to work.

Course Descriptions

Video and Media Technology

Video and Media Technology is an introductory course designed to provide students with experience and awareness in electronic visual media. Students are introduced to camera operation, studio and electronic news gathering, television lighting, audio recording, script writing, and editing techniques. Producing and directing television news, commercials, and full -length programs are also explored.

Television Production I

Television Production I is a first-level course designed to introduce students to the theory and operation of video production equipment. Emphasis is placed on proper use and application of communication technology to achieve specific objectives. Students are actively involved in both field and studio productions with a variety of purposes. The student will learn how to operate TV cameras, associated audio equipment, video-switching and processing equipment, recorders, and editors.

Television Production II

Television Production II provides students with the opportunity to build on the skills learned in Television Production I with emphasis being placed on direction, production, and news broadcasting. Importance is placed on using program proposals, scripts, and story boards to produce refined professional productions.

Television Production III/Practicum

Television Production III/Practicum focuses on the practical application of advanced broadcast productions with emphasis placed on producing, video shooting, and editing skills. It is an opportunity to provide students with the experience they need for a successful school-to-work transition.

Future Career Opportunities

 

  • Executive Producer oversees one or several programs or program series.
  • Producer oversees an individual production including technical and non-technical production elements.
  • Technical Director oversees all technical setups and operations during a production.
  • Lighting Director oversees studio and field lighting for large productions.
  • Camera Operators or Videographers operate studio and field cameras.
  • Video Operator or Video Engineer adjusts the camera controls for optimal camera pictures.
  • Videotape Operator operates videotape recorders during the production.
  • Video Editor operates video editing equipment.
  • Screenwriter writes video scripts.
  • Sound Designer oversees "designing" the sound track of a complex production.
