12th Grade Seminars

For an updated syllabus and seminar schedule for the year, please refer to the Canvas pages. If you don't have access, contact your gifted education teacher.

Senior students are offered 4-6 seminars for the school year with at least one additional field trip during the school year to reinforce the topics covered during seminars.  Permission forms are sent home weeks in advance of the trip and must be returned for students to attend.  Seminars are offered to 12th graders during FLEX periods to minimize lost class time. Students may attend one or both FLEX periods on days gifted seminars are offered. Due to school events, testing, snow, or other circumstances, seminar dates may change. Any changes will be communicated with students via Canvas Announcements and student emails

The seminars cover philosophical topics in the areas of metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics. The topics may include any of the following:

  •  Self: Who am I and where do I go from here? What is the self and where does it reside?
  •  Metaphysics: What is real? Are there layers of reality? How do we know that we are really experiencing reality?
  •  Knowledge: What is knowledge? How do you know that you know?
  •  Acquisition of Knowledge: How is knowledge shaped by sense perceptions? How is knowledge shaped by our paradigms?
  •  Truth: What is truth? Is there truth or only belief? How does man create his own truth?
  •  Success: What is your purpose in life? What is happiness? How can you achieve your goals?

Referral for Gifted Services

Peers, faculty, and parents are always welcome to refer a student for evaluation for gifted services. In addition, a student may nominate himself/herself. Please see Mrs. Collette in room 5-206 for a referral form. You may also contact  Mrs. Amanda Collette with any questions or requests for additional information about the gifted program.
